Our Protagonists
Jonathan Harker
The opening POV for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Jonathan Harker begins the novel traveling through Transylvania. He goes to meet the titular Count Dracula in his castle, only to find that, in the coming weeks, not everything there is it seems. Between the Count’s odd hours (staying up nearly to dawn,) unknown eating schedule (which never seems to coincide with Jonathan’s,) and a curious taste in décor (there’s not a single mirror, save Jonathan’s own,) it almost seems cause for concern…
Wilhelmina “Mina” Harker (née Murray)
The second of Dracula’s primary POV characters, Mina Murray, fiancé of one Jonathan Harker, is a dear friend of Lucy Westenra. While visiting Lucy in Whitby, a coastal town in Yorkshire, England, Mina observes the strange appearance of an unknown ship in the bay. A few nights later, Mina wakes to find Lucy missing. Mina searches across town and finds her alone in the ruins of the old churchyard… except that, for a brief, moonlit moment, Mina swears she saw a dark shadow looming over her friend…
Dr. John “Jack” Seward
The third of Dracula’s primary POV characters, Dr. Seward works at an asylum near Purfleet-on-Thames, England. A doctor, his patient entries increasingly focus on the events surrounding his once-love and friend, Lucy Westenra, who he visits upon request of her fiancé, Arthur Holmwood. Lucy, ever since her time in Whitby, grows progressively pale and weak. Holmwood suspects an anemia, but Dr. Seward remains unsure of this diagnosis, and contacts his friend and mentor, Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, for help…
Dr. Abraham Van Helsing
Originally from Amsterdam, Dr. Van Helsing is drawn into the plot of Dracula by his good friend, Dr. Seward, who asks him to visit Seward’s patient, Lucy Westenra. Lucy, for the past several weeks, has grown pale and tired, seemingly anemic, but Dr. Seward seeks a second opinion. Once Dr. Van Helsing visits, he agrees, fearing a supernatural cause. Leaving Dr. Seward to watch over Lucy each night, he goes back to Amsterdam to conduct some research…
Lucy Westenra
Lucy Westenra (friend to Mina Harker (née Murray,) fiancé to Arthur Holmwood, friend to her former suitors Dr. Seward and Quincey Morris, and patient of Dr. Van Helsing) may be a character known for her connections, but it is while in Whitby, that her own story starts. Sleepwalking like she did as a child, Lucy wanders one night all the way up a cliff into the graveyard across town, unknowing of the shadow stalking her…
Arthur Holmwood (add’l. Lord Godalming)
Arthur Holmwood, newly engaged to Lucy Westenra, remains separated from her for most of the novel. While separated initially over the summer, Holmwood misses the early days of Lucy’s suspected anemia. Once they reunite, he calls Dr. Seward out of increasing concern, but is called away soon after by his equally ailing father. Stuck apart from her again, Holmwood nervously awaits news…
Quincey Morris
Quincey Morris, originally from Texas, is the final of Lucy’s once-suitors, now-friends (alongside Dr. Seward.) He is perhaps the least expanded-upon major character of Dracula. When Morris appears on-page, he’s often alongside his dear friend, Arthur Holmwood. After Holmwood doesn’t hear from Dr. Seward, Dr. Van Helsing, or Lucy in some time, it’s Morris who goes to investigate…
Our Antagonist
Count Dracula
Deep in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania, just off the Borgo Pass, lies a centuries-old castle, housing within its ancient walls the mysterious Count Dracula, the villain of his titular novel. There he waits for one Jonathan Harker to confirm the Count’s recent purchase of Carfax Abbey, an estate in Purfleet-on-Thames, England. Finishing his purchase (and setting up a few… activities for Jonathan, once Dracula leaves) he departs from his castle for Varna, ready to board the Demeter for a small coastal town, Whitby…
